Zong Engage: Esports Platform & Live Tournament Series
From gaming bundle to subscriber engagement engine: a subscription-based esports platform that turned Zong subscribers into competitive players inside the operator ecosystem.
The Opportunity
Physical esports events were gaining global momentum, and mobile gaming was already a major traffic category on the Zong network. The opportunity was to move beyond monetizing gaming data and build a platform that made subscribers active participants in Zong's own gaming ecosystem.
The Approach
I led product design for Zong Engage: a subscription-based esports platform with AAA mobile titles, in-app tournaments, leaderboards, and cash prize pools. The roadmap also included an Academy module where professional esports players could coach customers on gameplay improvement.
To prove the model at scale, we executed a flagship live esports tournament broadcast on YouTube, which trended at #11 worldwide during the event.
The Impact
- Scaled monthly revenue from PKR 2M to PKR 12M, achieving 6x growth.
- Reached 11% bundle conversion on the targeted gamer base.
- Onboarded 26,000+ gamers onto the platform.
- Delivered a 20% uplift in overall gaming portfolio revenue and engagement.
- Established Zong as the first Pakistani operator with a native esports platform.
The Takeaway
Gaming was not a one-off bundle category. It was a community. By wrapping competitive infrastructure, prizes, and aspirational content around the core data offer, gaming became a subscriber engagement engine instead of only a data-consumption use case.
